Preseason SAC Women's Basketball Poll Released

The Langston Lady Lions tallied 68 points which slotted them in the 6th spot in the SAC Preseason Poll

OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist reeled in the top spot in the preseason Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball poll.

The league coaches placed Wayland Baptist at the No. 1 slot with nine top votes and 116 points in the voting. The Flying Queens have taken the last four SAC Tournament championships and won or shared the past three conference regular-season crowns.

Wayland Baptist (33-4, 20-2 SAC) reached the round of 16 in the NAIA Championship Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa last season. League teams Mid-America Christian, Science & Arts and Texas Wesleyan also qualified for the NAIA Championship Tournament, but Wayland Baptist was the only squad from the SAC to make it past the Opening Round in 2021-22.

Texas Wesleyan took the second position in the poll with 104 points and one first-place nod. Wayland Baptist knocked off Texas Wesleyan 85-71 for the SAC Tournament title March 1 at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City. The Lady Rams (25-7) posted their most wins since 2011-12.

Next in the poll came Mid-America Christian with 103 points and a No. 1 vote. Science & Arts became the final team to haul in a top vote along with 97 points.

John Brown garnered 83 points to be in fifth place, while Langston nabbed sixth with 68 points.

Oklahoma City University secured the seventh spot with 56 points, and Southwestern Christian finished with 47 points to be eighth. Southwestern Assemblies of God came up with 45 points to snare ninth.

North Texas Dallas accumulated 35 points for 10th place with Panhandle State (27 points) and Central Christian (11 points) taking the last two spots.

The Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament tips off with quarterfinals on campus sites Feb. 23, 2023. The league tournament returns to the Gaulke Activity Center on the Mid-America Christian campus for the semifinals and championships Feb. 27-28. The NAIA Championship Opening Round happens March 7-8 at host sites throughout the country, and the NAIA Championship Tournament takes place March 13-18 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
