LANGSTON - Clutch free throws down the stretch by Bryce Monroe, paved the way for the No. 1 Langston Lions to outlast the Mid-America Christian Evangels 65-61 on Tuesday night at C.F. Gayles Field House.
Langston trailed 57-56 at the 1:42 mark when Monroe answered the call with a three-point bucket to push the Lions back in front 59-57. Monroe managed to go six-for-six at the free throw line the rest of the way as the Lions improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the SAC with the 65-61 victory.Â
"We made a lot of mistakes tonight we need to get cleaned up but I'm really proud of our guys for gutting this one out and finding a way to beat a good basketball team," head coach Chris Wright said. "MACU's going to be at the top of our conference when it's all said and done, this was a huge win and I'm just proud of our guys."
Monroe led all scorers with 24 points on six-of-17 shooting and finished a perfect nine-of-nine from the free throw line. Joshua Smith and Daylon Andrews chipped in nine and eight points respectively.
Collectively, the Lions hit 43 percent (24-of-56) overall and finished 11-of-13 at the free throw line.
Langston (6-2, 3-2 SAC) travels to face the University of North Texas at Dallas on Thursday, December 5th.
