No. 2 Langston Clinches Second Straight SAC Title

LANGSTON – Four players scored in double figures as the No. 2 Langston University Lions outlasted the Wayland Baptist Pioneers 70-65, clinching the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title on Thursday night.

Trailing 68-65, Wayland Baptist's Tahjae Hill missed a game-tying three-pointer with under ten seconds remaining. Jay Allen-Tovar quickly corralled the rebound and Anthony Roy knocked down back-to-back free throws on the ensuing the foul call by the Pioneers to effectively the seal the 70-65 victory for Langston.

"It is really hard to win a conference title, especially in a league such as the SAC. To go 40-3 over two years and win back-to-back regular season championships is special," Langston University head men's basketball coach Chris Wright said. "I'm proud of our players, staff and everyone at our university that has played a role in this success."

The victory clinches the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title for the second straight season for the Lions (24-1, 18-1 SAC) and head coach Chris Wright. The last back-to-back regular season champions in the SAC occurred during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons when Texas Wesleyan clinched two straight regular season titles.

Langston receives the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SAC conference tournament which starts on Feb. 29. and secured an automatic berth in the 86th annual NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship tournament scheduled to begin on March 15.

Cortez Mosley led Langston in scoring with 20 points, Roy chipped in 18 and Toru Dean finished with 14. D'Monte Brown rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 on the night.

Langston (24-1, 18-1 SAC) hosts Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday, Feb. 17. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the C.F. Gayles Field House on the campus of Langston University.
