Top-Seeded Langston Grounds Pilots 78-61, Advance to Quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five players scored in double figures as No. 1 seed Langston University knocked off LSU-Shreveport 78-61 in the 86th Annual NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship Round of 16 on Friday at the historic Municipal Auditorium.

The top-seeded Lions advance to the quarterfinal round and face No. 2 seed Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, March 23 at 5 p.m.

Both squads came out of the gate slow in the first half with Langston trailing at one point 19-14 at the 8:29 mark. The Lions roared back to life on a 18-3 scoring run, capped by a three-point bomb from D'Monte Brown to put Langston in front 32-22 with four minutes left until halftime.

Langston kept pace the rest of the way and entered halftime in front 38-29.

The Lions opened the second half on a 14-6 scoring run, taking a commanding 52-35 advantage at the 12-minute mark. Langston led by as many as 22 points in the second half as they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinal Round and improved to 33-1 overall on the season.

"We made some mistakes in the first half that I thought were a bit uncharacteristic of us, but we came out after halftime and I feel like our defensive energy really picked up," head coach Chris Wright said. "I thought we were able to force them into some tougher shots and that was the difference in the second half."

Anthony Roy led Langston in scoring with 17 points on six-of-14 shooting, D'Monte Brown added 16 and G'Quavious Lennox finished with 14. Toru Dean and Cortez Mosley also tallied double figures in points with 13 and 10 points apiece.

Senior point guard Toru Dean talked about what sets this team apart is the variety of offensive play makers at their disposal.

"Our team is special; we have a variety of different scorers and play makers, and we also have two of the best big men in the country," Dean said. "When they can score at a high level and I can get them the ball, get them to their spots and playing at our pace we are unbeatable."

Collectively, Langston hit 47 percent (24-of-51) overall and finished 23-of-34 at the free throw line and held the Pilots to 43 percent (21-of-49) and two-of-16 from three-point range. The Lions outscored LSUS in points off turnovers 20-11 and bench points 19-14.

The Lions will square off in the quarterfinal round for the second time in program history. The last time Langston advanced to the quarterfinal round occurred in the 2016-17 season where the Lions fell to William Penn University 84-80 on March 18, 2017. Langston (33-1) faces No. 2 seed Indiana Wesleyan tomorrow. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
