No. 20 Langston Defeats USAO, Clinches SAC Regular Season Title

LANGSTON – The No. 20 Langston University Lady Lions secured the first ever Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball regular season championship in program history by defeating the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma 63-49 on Saturday evening inside C.F. Gayles Field House.

"It's a special day, I'm just so excited for the players, the alumni and family. To be able to do this on senior day, everything came full circle, and I couldn't be prouder of them," head coach Chris Vincent said. "It's about them, our players came here for a reason, our returners came here for a reason, they trusted the process and they all bought in. I had a vision of what it would look like this year and what today could look like and I'm just glad it all came to fruition."

The Lady Lions led 21-12 entering the second quarter and managed to outscore the Drovers 15-9 to build a 35-21 halftime advantage. Langston led by as much as 18 points in the third quarter following a three-point bucket by Mattie Boyd at the 2:24 mark.

USAO never got within 10 points the rest of the way as the Drovers concluded the regular season at 16-12 overall.

Jordan Brown finished with 20 points on six-of-16 shooting on the night; this was Brown's fourth 20-point game on the season. Koreea Kirksey rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points on the day.

Collectively, Langston held USAO to 35 percent (19-of-54) overall and forced 16 turnovers. Langston outscored USAO 21-6 in points off turnovers and 26-14 in second chance points.

In his inaugural season at the helm, head coach Chris Vincent has led the Lady Lions to their first ever SAC women's basketball regular season title and a 26-2 mark in the regular season. The 26-win total is the highest win total since the 2014-15 season when Langston finished the season 28-4 under former head coach Cheryl Miller.

By virtue of clinching the SAC regular season conference title, the Lady Lions are the number one seed in the SAC tournament beginning on Thursday, Feb. 27 at home and have earned an automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament slated to begin on March 14.

Langston (26-2) hosts Oklahoma City University in the SAC Tournament Quarterfinals at home on Thursday, Feb. 27. Game time is TBD.
