No. 4 seed Langston Halts Mustangs in OT, Advance to Round of 16

LANGSTON – The No. 4 seed Langston Lions needed overtime but managed to prevail 81-76 over No. 5 seed Central Baptist to advance to the NAIA Men's Basketball National Tournament Round of 16 on Saturday night inside C.F. Gayles Field House.

After a scoreless three minutes to open overtime, Kamron Brice pulled the Lions in front with a three-pointer to make it 77-74 with two minutes left. The Mustangs' Jonas Carlisle countered with back-to-back free throws with 28 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing offensive possession, Joshua Smith worked his way inside off an assist by Jamison Epps to put Langston back up by three at 79-76 with 15 ticks left. Carlisle's game-tying three-point attempt came up short into the hands of Brice with under 10 seconds remaining.

Brice knocked down back-to-back free throws to seal the 81-76 victory over Central Baptist and send Langston to the NAIA Men's Basketball National Tournament Round of 16 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. for the third straight year.

"I'm really happy for our players and coaching staff. We have had so much adversity this season. To see how our guys have grown throughout the course of the year is really special," head coach Chris Wright said. "We have won close game after close game the last couple of weeks, it says a lot about the resiliency of our teams. It has not been pretty basketball but there are a lot of pretty basketball teams not playing right now."

Brice finished the day with 21 points including five-of-eight from three-point range. Mario McKinney finished 16 points, Darrius Hughes added 11 and Smith chipped in 10 on the day.

Langston (26-7) advances to the Round of 16 for their third straight year under head coach Chris Wright and faces No. 1 seed College of Idaho on Thursday, March 20 at 5 p.m. The Lions meet the Yotes for the second straight year in the postseason after defeating College of Idaho 58-52 to advance to the NAIA National Championship game last season.
