No. 20 Langston Defeats Nelson University, Clinch SAC Title

LANGSTON – Three players scored in double figures as the No. 20 Langston University Lady Lions knocked off Nelson University 78-62 to clinch the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title for the second straight year on Saturday afternoon inside C.F. Gayles Field House.

The Lady Lions led 42-39 at the six minute mark in the third quarter and used a pivotal 11-5 scoring run to begin to pull away from Nelson University at 53-44 with 3:41 left in the third. Langston put their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter and pushed their lead to 16 at 74-58 with 1:54 remaining.

Areyanna Hunter led the Lady Lions in scoring with 20 points and six assists; Janiyah Tucker and Layla Curry also finished in double figures with 17 and 16 points apiece.

"It's year 18 for me and this might be the most emotional year for me," head coach Chris Vincent said. "With the players we had coming in, with the expectations and the stuff they've been through, to go 24-4 and win the league, they see that we needed everybody. I think we've had three games where everyone is fully healthy, and everyone had to step up. I couldn't be more happy for them right now, they all deserve this."

Langston clinched their second straight SAC regular season title, the last time the Lady Lions won back-to-back regular season championships dates to the 2011-2012 when Langston won their sixth straight in the Red River Athletic Conference. The last back-to-back champions in the SAC was Wayland Baptist who won the conference title three straight seasons from 2019-2020 to 2021-2022.

The Lady Lions have clinched the number one seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament presented by Athletic Solutions. They will square off against Texas Wesleyan on Thursday, Feb. 26 at noon at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Lady Lions have also clinched an automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament slated to begin on March 13.
