Lady Lions Split on Day One of SAC Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Langston University Lady Lions managed a split on day one of the Sooner Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, represented by Netting Pros/STADIONIC, after falling to Oklahoma City University and defeating Wayland Baptist on Thursday, April 30.

No. 2 Oklahoma City 9, No. 7 Langston 1 (6 innings)
In the opener at Ann Lacy Stadium, three players drove in two runs while Brynlee Alsip allowed only two hits as the host Stars claimed a 9-1 victory over Langston to advance in the championship.
 
Oklahoma City broke the game open in the second inning as they plated four runs while adding to the advantage with two runs in the third and three runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain the victory. Tara Hoehner provided the final margin of victory with a two-run blast to left field to propel the Stars to the next round.
 
Hoehner, Gabby Moreno, and Jessica Phares all drove in two runs while Kaiden Spidell chipped in with three hits to pace the Stars' offence, while Alsip went five frames with five strikeouts to earn the win in the circle. Tandy Garrett led the Lions with a home run, while Ryan Cornist added the other Langston hit in the loss.

In the second elimination game of the day, Langston scattered 10 hits and scored all of their runs in the middle frames of the contest to advance to the second day of the championship with a 5-1 victory over Wayland Baptist. 
 
The Pioneers broke out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as Berkley Bradley had an RBI single, and Kynleigh Kirby drove in a run to give Wayland Baptist an early 2-0 lead. The Lions responded in the top of the second as Ari Bell lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score a run and cut the deficit to 2-1. Asharah Thibodeaux evened the contest in the third with an RBI single, while the Lions plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Thibodeaux added an insurance run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to give Langston a 5-2 advantage.
 
Four Lions had two hits in the contest, while Thibodeaux had two runs batted in to pace the Langston attack, while Lilly Ritter earned the win in the circle. Mikayla Carrillo led the Pioneers' efforts with two hits as they completed the season with an overall record of 27-23.

Thursday's victory was the first SAC tournament victory since the 2021 season, when Langston defeated Mid-America Christian 2-1. Langston (18-26) squares off against Texas Wesleyan on Friday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
