Wright Finalizes 2025-26 Coaching Staff

LANGSTON – Langston University head men's basketball coach Chris Wright has finalized his coaching staff ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 season with the appointment of Dametrius Walker, Steve Alexander, Terrell Alfred, and James Hays.

Dametrius Walker comes to Langston after serving as Interim Head Coach and Associate Head Coach for two seasons under Head Coach Ryan Miley. Walker started as a Graduate Assistant at Newman University before beginning two stints as the top assistant of various programs. One being the Fort Scott Greyhounds in KJCCC during the 2020-22 seasons, later returning to Ohio at Hocking College, as an Associate Head Coach from 2022-2024 in Nelsonville, Ohio.

During his time with Ryan Miley and as active Head Coach, Walker helped coach two JUCO All-Americans and multiple OCCAC All-Conference players along with coaching the program's first ever Division 1 signee.in program. Walker also helped Hocking to its first ever trip to the NJCAA National Tournament, as they were crowned Region 12 tournament champs during the 2023-24 campaign. The Hawks won 2 OCCAC Conference titles with an overall record of 78-18.
"Coach (Dametrius) Walker did a tremendous job at Hocking College, when you look at what he was able to do there, it is impressive," head coach Chris Wright noted. "Our players are going to greatly benefit from being around him daily. He is very passionate about helping young men and has a bright future in the coaching profession."

Steve Alexander joins the staff at Langston University as the Director of Player Development. He comes to the LU as one of the most decorated high school coaches in the State of Oklahoma, serving as The Head Coach at Douglass High School since 2022. Alexander has compiled an 89-21 record along with back-to-back 4A State Championships in 2023 and 2024. He has received a plethora of coaching honors including two-time 4A Coach of the Year recipient (2023,2023), Gatorade Coach of the Year (2023), Super 5 Coach of the Year (2023) and Conference Coach of the Year (2025).

Prior to his position at Douglass High School, Alexander served as an assistant coach at Heritage Hall High School for four seasons. The program appeared in the state tournament in all four seasons and won a state championship in 2018.

Before a successful career playing professionally in both Mexico and the ABA, he was a stand-out player at Langston University. Alexander helped the Lions win a conference championship and was named 1st Team All-Conference and Newcomer of the Year. He is also the founder, coach, and trainer of Alexander Elite Training LLC.

"Coach (Steve) Alexander is one of the elite basketball coaches at any level," said Wright. "His record and success as a head coach speaks for itself. I can't express how excited I am to add him to our staff. Him and I are very like-minded on what it means to have a good program, and how we go about it is very similar.  He is a without question going to make us better by working with and developing our players."

Terrell Alfred joins the staff as a graduate assistant and began his career at Dakota College at Bottineau where he earned All-Conference Second Team honors as a freshman. He continued his JUCO career at Seward County Community College before transferring to the University of Jamestown to finish his collegiate career at the NAIA level where he played for former Langston University Associate Head Coach Danny Neville.
"Coach (Terrell) Alfred comes to us after being highly recommended by Coach (Danny) Neville. I would trust Coach Neville with my life, and so this was an easy choice for us," said Wright. "Coach Alfred has been coached by not only Coach Neville but Jason Sautter, who is a tremendous coach as well. There is no doubt that he is tough and understands how to win by being around those two guys. Our players are going to enjoy working with him day in and day out."

James Hays comes to the LU as the Director of Scouting and Analytics after spending the last two seasons as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Central Missouri. Prior to that he spent three seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, Mo.

In his second stint with the Greyhounds, Hays helped MACC to a 30-4 overall record and an appearance in the second-round of the 2023 NJCAA DI Men's Basketball tournament. Hays began his coaching career as an assistant with William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. from 2014-16 where he guided the team to their first-ever top 25 national ranking in school history.

In November of 2016, Hays was named head coach where he led the Owls to their longest winning streak in program history, including a program-best 22 wins in 2016-17.

"I have tried to hire Coach Hays in a full-time position on multiple occasions, but it hasn't worked out previously for one reason or another. To be able to add him in the capacity is huge for us," said Wright. He is a guy that just gets it! He is a winner and there is nothing that he isn't good at. Having him on staff is going to pay great dividends for us."

The 2025-2026 campaign marks the fourth season with Wright leading the Langston program. The Lions are a combined 92-13 during that span and have advanced to at least the NAIA Sweet 16 in all three of those seasons, highlighted by a National Championship appearance in 2025. The program has also won two Sooner Athletic Conference regular season titles to go with all three SAC Tournament championships.

Langston opens their season at home on Friday, October 24 by hosting Florida College. Tip-off time is set for 7 p.m. inside the historic C.F. Gayles Field House.
