Women's Basketball Claims Seven All-Conference Selections

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sarah Snodgrass of John Brown has been named the 2026 Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. The league's 12 head coaches voted on the award.

Michael Sons of Nelson earned the conference Coach of the Year award after leading the Lions to a tie for second in the conference regular season race and an appearance in the tournament semifinals.

Areyanna Hunter of Langston was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Cania Mitchell of Wayland Baptist garnered the league's Freshman of the Year honor, with Janiyah Tucker of Langston earning the Newcomer of the Year award. Nelson's Lauryn Scalice grabbed the Sixth Women of the Year honor, and Brooke Curry of Oklahoma City garnered the league's Sportsmanship Award.

Snodgrass led the conference this season in scoring with 21.8 points per game and in rebounding with 13.4 boards per contest. Snodgrass also shot 43.4 percent from the field while connecting on 222 field goals during the year.

Hunter was a key part of the Langston defensive effort, as the Lions were the top defensive team in the conference, surrendering only 54.2 points per game. Hunter grabbed 59 defensive caroms this season and added 62 steals to her stat line.

Mitchell was sixth in the conference in scoring with 15.7 points per game while having 5.8 rebounds per contest. Mitchell also had 66 steals during the year and handed out a league-high 5.1 assists per game.

Tucker led the Lions in scoring with an average of 15.6 points per game, while grabbing 3.3 rebounds per contest this season. Tucker also had 32 steals during the year for Langston.

Scalice was outstanding coming off the bench for Nelson. She averaged 11.0 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per contest. Scalice was also second for the Lions in three point shots made with 70.

Curry earned the conference Sportsmanship Award from the coaches as she was a great example of how to conduct herself on the court during the season.

Sons led the Lions to an overall record of 22-6 and a league mark of 17-5 this past season, which gave Nelson the No. 3 seed in the postseason SAC tournament. This season was a stark turnaround for the Lions as they won 13 more games this season after only winning nine games last year.
