Preseason SAC Men's Basketball Poll Released

The Langston Lions received a total of 93 points including 3 first-place votes to land them in 4th in the SAC Preseason Poll.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The votes are in for this year's Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball preseason poll, and for the first time since the 2014-15 season, five teams received at least one No. 1 vote. Wayland Baptist, last year's SAC Tournament runner-up, will start the 2022-23 season in the top spot with three first place votes and 105 points overall.

The Pioneers (19-13, 13-9 SAC) narrowly edged out Science & Arts (26-6, 19-3 SAC), who also had three first-place votes, by just two total points to claim the preseason No. 1 ranking. The Drovers went to the NAIA Championship Tournament last season, falling in the round of 32 to LSU Shreveport.

Mid-America Christian (20-13, 12-10 SAC), an at-large selection into last year's NAIA national tournament, were the coaches' third pick with 96 points, while Langston vaulted up into the fourth position with three first-place votes, and 93 points overall. The fifth pick in this year's poll went to Texas Wesleyan, who had one first place nod and 87 points in the poll.

Last season's SAC Tournament champion Southwestern Assemblies of God found its way into the poll at No. 6 this season, despite a Round of 16 appearance in last year's NAIA national tournament. They received 85 points and two first place votes. The Lions won the conference tournament championship 58-56 over Wayland Baptist on March 1 at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City.

The second half of the poll included Oklahoma City University at No. 7 with 59 points, John Brown in the No. 8 spot with 57 points, Southwestern Christian with 39 points at No. 9, and Central Christian with 32 points to claim the No. 10 Spot.

The final two spots went to Oklahoma Panhandle State at No. 11 with 19 points, and North Texas Dallas with 17 points, landing at No. 12.

The Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament tips off with quarterfinals on campus sites Feb. 23, 2023. The league tournament returns to the Gaulke Activity Center on the Mid-America Christian campus for the semifinals and championships Feb. 27-28. The NAIA Championship Opening Round happens March 7-8 at host sites throughout the country, and the NAIA Championship Tournament takes place March 13-18 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
