LANGSTON - Langston University Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Wright has been named as the HoopDirt.com NAIA Coach of the Year presented by Just Play Solutions for the 2022-23 college basketball season. Wright qualified for this award by earning the HoopDirt.com / Just Play Solutions Coach of the Week for Week 4 of the season.
In just one season at Langston, Wright has produced one of the biggest turnarounds in college basketball history. Before being hired last spring, Langston had gone 1-37 overall in the past two seasons. This year, under Wright's leadership, the Lions went 31-3 and advanced to the round of 16 in the NAIA national tournament.
Wright's squad also went 20-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, capturing both the regular season and tournament titles. They also went a perfect 16-0 at home on the season, and were ranked #5 in the country in the final NAIA Top 25 poll.
For his efforts this season, Langston's first-year head coach was also named as the John Hudson Coach of the Year award for the SAC.
